First order for the English Electric 12CSVT

As part of the 1955 Modernisation Plan for Britains railways, the English Electric Company were invited to submit bids for a number of different classes of locomotives with varying power outputs. In January 1959 an order was placed for 42 locomotives in the Type 3 power range which would be fitted with the developing 12CSVT Diesel Engine
