The ´Preservation´ of locomotives fitted with the 12CSVT diesel engine is a worldwide affair, although the UK is by far the most ´active´ of all the countries with over 50 locomotives having been ´preserved´ at some stage, although some of these were later sold for scrap or re-use by mainline operators.

Of the African nations that have seen 12CSVT action, only one has joined the 12CSVT preservation scene to date, in Zimbabwe a DE3 class locomotive can be seen on display at Bulawayo Railway Museum. Kenya still has a few in daily operation, which gives hope that one of these may find its way to the Nairobi Railway Museum, whilst Tanzania still has a couple which could possibly be preserved. Sudan received the First and Last of the UK built 12CSVT's and although it is believed none are left in traffic, a photo of the museum exhibits at Atbara Museum shows an unidentified and sadly derelict 1000 class diesel in the line of locomotives. The final country to receive a 12CSVT fitted locomotive (from new) in Africa was Ghana, all of this class has now been scrapped.

Of the 105 12CSVT fitted locomotives built at Rocklea in Australia, two were preserved, but one of these was then sold to a mainline operator leaving just one in preservation. Hopefully some of the remaining locomotives that are in use or stored around Australia will one day join the ranks of the preserved fleet.

With all these locomotives in preservation, they need somewhere to be displayed, restored or operated. In the ´Locations´ lists, a site that is connected with 12CSVT preservation will appear on the appropriate area list. These lists are colour coded, are locations which have previously had a visit or been a base and those which are currently home to a 12CSVT. Further information on these sites can be found by clicking the link provided.

Details of ´Preserved Events´ can be found in this section.
