The 'locals' seem disinterested with the throb of the 12CSVT diesel engine fitted to Class 87 no. 8735 as it waits at Mau Summit station on October 2nd 2007 with a service to Kisumu
All locomotives built by English Electric that were fitted with the 12CSVT Diesel Engine were built at one of three locations, although as can be seen the build list options have been split into five sections, all will be explained. The first location to be used to construct these locomotives was the Vulcan Foundy at Newton le Willows (Lancashire, United Kingdom), followed by the Darlington Works of Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns (County Durham, United Kingdom), which was part of the English Electric Group, and finally at Rocklea Works in Brisbane (Queensland, Australia).
At the start of construction the Vulcan Foundry was operated solely by the English Electric Co, but towards the end of construction at this site, the company merged and was rebranded English Electric - AEI Traction before it disappeared into the GEC Traction branding at the end of mainline locomotive production. Therefore the ´Vulcan Foundry [VF]´ option represents the early buildds and ´Vulcan Foundry [EA]´ option for the last years of operation. The Rocklea lists have been split in a similar vein to the Vulcan lists. This is to differentiate between English Electric Australia [EEA] at the start of construction in Australia and General Electric Co. Australia [GECA] which the company became by the end of production.
The build lists are displayed in the order of the works number rather than the actual running number received on introduction to service with the indicated company. Information listed includes the Works Number, Date to Traffic, Original Number, Built for, last running number carried and current status. A link has been added so that you can view the locomotive page if desired.
