Welcome to the ´Class Section´ of English Electric Growl!
This section has been sub-divided to make it easier to browse, these sub-sections currently include ´Australian Built´, ´British Built´ and ´Status´, all of which are accessible through the links to the left, a short overview of each is included below.
´Australian Built´
The list of Australian built classes has been split into three, these are the New build classes that left the Rocklea Works of English Electric in Brisbane, Queensland, when they were new to service, Rebuilt includes classes that were either rebuilt or reclassified during their working life but retained the English Electric 12CSVT diesel engine, the last topic is Re-Engined which as suggests, means that a new class was created when a locomotive was rebuilt or reclassified but was fitted with an alternative engine instead of the E.E.12CSVT or indeed no engine at all. All will be explained as you delve deeper into the site and class information.
´British Built´
Similarly to the Australian built section, British built has also been sub-divided into 3 areas. The New build classes that left the Vulcan Works of English Electric in Newton le Willows, Merseyside or the Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn, Darlington Works, when they were new to service, Rebuilt includes classes that were either rebuilt or reclassified during their working life but retained the English Electric 12CSVT diesel engine, the last sub-section is Re-Engined which as suggests, means that a new class was created when a locomotive was rebuilt or reclassified but was fitted with an alternative engine instead of the E.E.12CSVT or indeed no engine at all. All will be explained as you delve deeper into the site and class information.
The final section, ´Status´, contains two lists, one relates to the current status of locomotives of the class with respect to their original classification, the other relates to the current status of locomotives of the class with respect to the final classifications. These can vary depending on withdrawals prior to reclassification.
