Why "English Electric Growl" you may ask yourself?
Put simply, the subject of this website is the 12CSV Diesel engine designed and originally constructed by the English Electric Co. Ltd and continued by the Ruston Paxman company, hence "English Electric". The "Growl" comes from the sound made by the traction version of the engine fitted to the British Built Class 37's locomotives, often known as "Growlers" by the railway enthusiasts. Both names were put together and the result was the name of this site,
ENGLISH ELECTRIC GROWL.
This site was originally set up to promote the history of the power unit and it's use in the rail traction industry around the globe. It was soon discovered that the engine was not solely used for traction purposes, but it has been used for a variety of marine applications and also in static conditions to drive electrical generators or pumping systems. This site has since been developed to include these other applications and is continuously being expanded to include more information.
If you can provide any information, images, etc. on these non-Traction uses, and indeed have any further information and images concerning the Traction uses too, please contact us using the links
here.
